A Saturday morning start to this surprising race. Surprising in that the race course set by other yacht clubs to Cherbourg is usually 70 miles but the RORC manage to extend this to a grueling 160 miles. The race committee has a choice of 4 courses and will set one 10 minutes before the start of the race, giving their navigators a headache before the start gun has gone.
This same event saw us reach our top speed recorded on our Volvo 60 which was 28.6 knots, not for the feint hearted - it was as exhilarating as sailing is likely to get. Reaching into the finish line at these sorts of speeds more than made up for the 50 mile beat in 35 knots of stormy seas earlier in the evening!
