2012 Caribbean 600

The Itinerary

The yacht will be moored in Falmouth Harbour, Antigua ready for you to join on the afternoon or evening of 16th February 2012. On arrival you will meet your fellow crew and spend some time on board familiarising yourself with her equipment and layout.

Accommodation can be onboard which should be comfortable. We will have a meal ashore that evening in a local pub such as the Mad Mongoose and get to know each other a little better and obviously to talk about the forthcoming race over a few Rum punches.

February 17th - After a full safety brief we will head out of harbour for a full days sailing to provide lots of training in all aspects of boat handling ready for the race the following day. You will all have the opportunity to helm, trim sails, navigate etc. We will return to harbour for another evening ashore.

February 18th - We will once again leave harbour for a short day sailing to consolidate the experiences of the previous day training. There is usually a fantastic party on this night held at the Antigua Yacht Club.

February 19th - Today will be spent in port where we will complete the final preparations for the 600 mile Offshore Race.

February 20th - Race Day. The race should take 3 days depending on weather conditions and we will soon settle into a watch system.  As the course involves many Island roundings the crew will have little time to get bored and the navigators task will be very testing.

The Yacht 'Safara'

The Yacht 'Safara'

‘Safara’ is a ‘fresh from her refit’ Andrews 72 state of the art race yacht.

She comes complete with a 20 sail wardrobe, and with her huge downwind sail area she will certainly get the adrenalin pumping and those muscles burning.

The yacht has been designed and developed as high performance race machine intended to race – fast.

Windward Sailing competed in the Caribbean 600 in 2011 and everyone found the race tough, a proper match at last for the Fastnet Race but in the sunshine. The yacht will sail with a crew of 14 in the Caribbean allowing for plenty of room below decks to enjoy the atmosphere whilst off watch.

The Crew

The crew will be made up with people such as yourselves who are enthusiastic about sailing racing and winning.

We do not require any previous racing experience as crew will be trained and coached in all aspects of racing a high performance yacht. Whilst we do not ask for previous racing experience it is important that any one intending to race on Venomous has a reasonable level of fitness. Some of the tasks involved can be physically demanding! But don’t let this put you off because we will be working together as a team covering all aspects of sailing:

  • Helming at all points of sail
  • Sail trim especially asymmetric spinnaker trimming
  • Boat speed
  • Teamwork
  • Effective boat handling techniques (upwind and downwind)
  • Yacht preparation
  • Watch systems and living aboard
  • Use of modern navigation and routing systems
